Spotlight: The Blind Kitchen

The image shows four kitchen tools designed for individuals who are visually impaired or blind, arranged neatly on a countertop:
	1.	Talking Digital Scale: A black scale labeled “TALKING” with a digital display and tactile buttons for “TARE” and “UNIT.” It allows users to hear the weight readings spoken aloud.
	2.	Mug with Braille: A cream-colored ceramic mug with raised Braille dots on the side, possibly indicating a label such as “tea” or “coffee,” helping with identification by touch.
	3.	Large Dial Timer: A white mechanical kitchen timer with bold, high-contrast black numbers and a large dial, making it easier to see and set.
	4.	Knife and Cutting Board: A white knife with a yellow safety guard, placed on a white cutting board. The knife has a non-slip, ergonomic handle, making it easier and safer to use by touch.

Are you blind or visually impaired and love the idea of cooking but are afraid to try your hand at cooking up a great meal in the kitchen? Maybe you have been told the kitchen is dangerous and have been discouraged to learn or maybe you wonder how it is possible for someone to cook with vision loss? Today I want to spotlight The Blind Kitchen.

The Blind Kitchen is a company founded by Debra Erickson who is a blind chef. She graduated from culinary school and served as a cooking class instructor for blind and visually impaired adults. She founded The Blind Kitchen to share the knowledge she has gained over the years when it comes to cooking with vision loss.

Debra shares helpful tips and techniques to safely and successfully cook complete meals independently as a person who is blind or has low vision. She shares these tips through video demonstrations and describes every step she is doing.

The Blind Kitchen also offers a range of cooking tools that have been adapted to help those cooking without sight or with low vision. You can learn more about the adapted cooking tools here.

I highly recommend that you subscribe to The Blind Kitchen’s YouTube channel. The channel contains helpful videos demonstrating how to use each tool in the kitchen.

I just want to mention that this post is not sponsored by The Blind Kitchen. I am just sharing it as a resource that I have found helpful and I hope it will be a helpful resource for you as well.

I believe that being blind or having low vision should not stop anyone from cooking and from having fun in the kitchen. If you are interested in cooking The Blind Kitchen also shares recipes with tips and techniques for cooks with vision loss.
